Cure for Boredom: How to Find the Adventure You’re Craving

While everyone wants to live a life of adventure, not many people can drop everything and immerse themselves in an expedition across the world. However, there are simple things that you can do every day that can make your life feel more adventurous and satisfying. Here are a few ideas to find a bit more adventure, and get you one step closer to finding the cure for boredom:

Switch Up the Routine

One of the main reasons we are bored is because we are living the same routine every day. Try switching up your routine—it’s easier than it sounds! Here are a few interesting things you can try to shake things up:

  1. Take a different route to work if you can
  2. Prepare something you’ve never tried before for dinner
  3. Start your morning or end your night differently than you normally would
  4. Hang out with your friends at a new venue
  5. Wear colors (or even styles) you don’t normally wear
  6. Change your hairstyle, get a haircut, or even dye your hair

Say “Yes” to Things When You Would Normally Say “No”

Saying “yes” not only breaks monotony, it allows you to step out of your comfort zone. So when someone asks you to do something for them or when a friend invites you out, say yes! Going out of our comfort zones and doing something we would not normally do keeps life interesting and allows us to grow and learn from our experiences.

Weekend Getaways

Get off the beaten track! We have weekends or days off that we normally don’t take advantage of—days we could use to relax, take a breather, and explore new things. Use a day or even an entire weekend to visit someplace new and exciting. And while you’re exploring, try something you’ve never done, tasted, or experienced. Talk to strangers, spend some alone time, or connect with like-minded and adventurous friends. You’ll never know what you could experience until you try.

Swap One Pastime with Another

One cure for boredom is to simply swap one of your daily pastimes with another you would not normally take part in. For example, you can watch the sunset sometimes instead of watching something on Netflix. While we all know that a good TV or Netflix binge can be great, spending some time doing something else (especially outdoors) can be good for you, even if it’s only a few times a week. You could also try something creative like painting, writing, or making music in lieu of just lounging around eating junk food. This way, you get to spend time doing something you like while improving your creativity and well-being at the same time.

Stop Dreaming and Start Planning

Instead of fantasizing over that international trip you’ve always wanted to go on, spend time developing a plan and save up the resources that will allow you to get there. There are so many apps you could use to make things easier. Check out travel blogs for tips, and ask your friends and family for other tips they could give as well if they’ve traveled to certain places on your bucket list.

Make Many, Many Mistakes and Celebrate Each of Them Along the Way

Too often, people are afraid to make mistakes, usually instantly equating it with failure. However, when we make mistakes, we are creating an adventure for ourselves! Figuring out how to fix a mistake or learning how to not make the same mistake again is a personal adventure that keeps us busy, focused, and rewarded once we find the solution. Mistakes don’t even have to be huge ones—something as simple as mispronouncing a word in a new language you’re learning can be considered a mistake you can turn around into something positive. Days, weeks, months, and years from that moment, you’ll look back at it and realize how far you’ve come—all because you were brave enough to make mistakes!

Don’t let finding the cure for boredom be intimidating. The basic idea here is to always have that childlike wonder by creating adventure. You can easily try something new by switching up the everyday routine, or get up and travel to discover more about yourself and the world. Don’t be afraid to explore and stay excited. The key is to challenge what’s normal and find some excitement in your life!
