Go to the Gym… to Rest?

When it comes to exercising, the world has gone through some pretty notable changes over the last few decades. We have seen running crazes and classroom fads involving aerobics. Gyms then began showcasing fitness circuits and more intriguing practices like Pilates and Zumba. Then, spin classes and yoga sessions entered into the picture as many gyms became more specialized. And of course, most recently, the pandemic forced all of us into our homes, inviting virtual workouts. Thus, it’s probably not too surprising that fitness programs are once again evolving. And this time, the latest trend appears to be that of recovery workouts.

What are recovery workouts? These fitness programs are essentially new exercise practices that help us recharge, destress, and relax. Embracing holistic exercise is something many people are craving. This means that they not only want to enjoy a high-intensity workout from time to time. But they also feel that it’s important to invest in some self-care practices that are less intense. Recovery workouts therefore play a part in many people’s routine related to holistic exercise strategies. And based on the demand, many gyms are increasingly offering various programs that meet this need.

The Importance of Recovery Workouts

When we think about exercise recovery, we tend to envision that wonderful cooldown period at the end. For some of us, it might involve stretching our muscles to reduce tightness and soreness. For others, it might be a relaxing pose where we quiet our minds and enjoy the moment. Certainly, these reflect important parts of our holistic exercise routine. But increasingly, many people believe entire workouts focused on recovery are beneficial. Coming off a year of pandemic stress, they value the advantages provided by such recovery workouts. As a result, they’re less likely to engage in high-intensity workouts and more likely to pursue a more calming experience.

According to recent statistics, over 40% of Americans prefer fitness programs that make them feel better. Almost 60% choose to exercise as a means to reduce their levels of stress. With this in mind, it’s not surprising that recovery workouts might be attractive. Indulging in a holistic exercise leaving you less tense and more refreshed sounds more appealing than being sweaty and exhausted. Plus, studies have shown that recovery is an important part of any exercise routine. Not only do these sessions have physical advantages to your heart, muscles and joints. But they also promote better emotional, mental and spiritual wellness. This is why they are considered a part of a holistic exercise practice.

Many Options to Choose From

When it comes to recovery workouts, there certainly isn’t just one type from which to choose. In fact, gym-goers are experimenting with a variety of practices that fall into this new fitness category. Some are even incorporating several different types of recovery workouts into their holistic exercise routines. The following are a few of the most recent fads you might consider if recovery workouts sound intriguing to you.

  • Massaging Tools and Techniques – A full body massage always sounds appealing and can be quite restorative. For some, an hour in the massage room on a regular basis can be part of their holistic exercise schedule. However, many others are using massage guns and hydromassages as recovery workouts as well. These can be added to an existing workout or performed in isolation. Not only can these increase circulation, flexibility, and range of motion. But they can also reduce muscle soreness and accelerate muscle recovery.
  • Compression and Pneumatic Devices – Compression sleeves and boots are also becoming popular as part of a holistic exercise ritual. By squeezing tissues, these devices improve circulation and can also reduce muscle soreness and tightness. They also are believed to reduce inflammation while helping muscles get rid of metabolism byproducts. These types of recovery workouts are most often performed after regular fitness routines. But they may also be performed as stand-alone sessions.
  • Hot and Cold Recovery Workouts – Gym-goers have used saunas for many decades as part of a holistic exercise program. But saunas as well as cold water immersion are becoming even more popular today. Exposure to temperature extremes can be quite relaxing and at times invigorating. In fact, studies are now suggesting brief sessions of temperature extremes, referred to as hormetic stress, can be beneficial.
  • Low-Intensity Sessions – Not everyone wants recovery workouts that require special tools or practices. Some are simply content with a lower-intensity exercise that allows them to wind down and relax. Therefore, many people choose a slow jog or low-intensity cycling session to help them destress. It’s also why holistic exercise practices like yoga have become attractive to millions. These are often the easiest and simplest way to allow your mind and body to recover.
  • Meditative Practices – As you might imagine, meditation and mindfulness practices are also great recovery workouts. These sessions might include breathing rituals, or they might involve positive affirmations, journaling, or guided relaxation. In any case, these are very effective ways to invite relaxation and recovery into your holistic exercise program. For many, these types of practices remain their preferred approach when it comes to reenergizing and destressing.
  • Stretching and Manipulation Techniques – When it comes to recovery workouts, stretching exercises are a staple. These are often performed after fitness sessions to reduce tightness and spasm while improving flexibility and mobility. But these can also be part of one’s recovery sessions along with the use of resistance bands and foam rollers. Have you ever tried spending a full hour simply stretching and caring for your body? You might just be amazed at how relaxing and refreshing such a holistic exercise practice can be.

Making Recovery Workouts Part of Your Routine

In an effort to promote health and wellness, it is now recognized that holistic exercise is essential. Recovery workouts can play a significant role in this regard. In addition to proper hydration, nutrition, and sleep, time spent relaxing and unwinding is essential. This doesn’t mean more active physical exercise isn’t important as well. But including some recovery workouts in your fitness routine is a good idea as well. Given their popularity today, it seems more and more people are realizing this simple fact.
